I agree that there should be a dress code. People must meet this code before I will play them:
1. Pants must cover your butt. This one is non-negotiable.
2. T-shirts should not have foul language printed on them.
3. Clothes must have been changed within the last two or three
days.

Very Reasonable

my thoughts exactly... i love how the rail beaters always find a way to slam a player...

and by the way, John ALWAYS is dressed nicely... i believe he is known as one of the best dressed in the sport.

Is someone swinging from the testies? hehehehe... I'm just messin with you man. See you sometime when I make it down there. I been lazy.. Played maybe 2 times in the last two months. I have no interest left in it.

The only item above that I agree with is #3. One and two are absolutely ridiculous if I am playing Shanelle.

Gentleman , and the Woim, this thread is about CJ and JS playing 9 ball, it's about a once 9 ball champion with a lot of heart stepping to the plate to play the U.S. Open champion. Quite frankly it doen't matter what kind of attire either player wears it's about competition, pool, and taking on a challenge. It's challenge matches of this sort that keeps the pulse of pool alive, not about how you dress. So Woim show it the respect that it deserves, instead of bashing.

I'll never understand people obsession with dress codes.
And there's always this weird assumption that formal attire will make the game more presentable and somehow that would be good for bussines. That's ridiculous, and a perfect example of it is poker. Look at the world series of poker; dudes are wearing baseball hats and t shirts, and they're playing for MILLIONS.
Maybe pool would be more appealing if people seemed less "professional" out there, and were actually dressed like they were casual and having fun.
Maybe that way people could relate to them better.
They're game is what we should be paying attention to. Who gives a shit what they're wearing.

I couldn't agree more. If they were playing pool on television for BIG money, it would become far more interesting to the average viewer. Watching two great players go out it on TV for a paltry purse, relegates pool to minor league status.

Have you noticed how often on televised matches, the commentators say absolutely nothing about the prize money? That's because it is embarassingly small.

true but . . . .

Jay,

I was watching the tournament of champions yesterday and the best of the best were playing for a total purse of fifty thousand. I suspect the players cut it up to suit themselves with the winner take all format but Allen sounded a bit silly going on and on about how these were all champions and how they were playing for fifty thousand which was super big money for them. They were throwing darts for $200,000 not long ago when I was flipping channels.

We find one reason after another why pool isn't more successful but none quite ring true. Clothes? Look at poker. Purses? Look at bowling. Bowling was on for years when the purses were lower than dirt.

I do see some upscale places to play pool now and I notice pool tables seem to be in more and more commercials and shows with a positive connotation so maybe things are looking up.

Add it up:
- suit, tie and dress shirt = $650
- 4 pairs of great shoes = $1300
- great custom cue = $1500
-Increase in the dignity of pool = Priceless!

I know I'm late in here, but something inside won't let this pass.

4 pair of shoes for $1,300??? I'm not trying to be funny here and this is not hyperbole, but all of my clothes & both of my pair of shoes (dress & running) don't cost $1,300 all together. That's way more than my HOUSE PAYMENT.

We live paycheck to paycheck like most others here. If I wasted $1,300 on shoes....SHOES! I would have to be nuts or something. I want my wife and kids to dress and look nice, but I would NEVER spend that kind of money on myself. Even if I did have it.

Not to gang pile on here, but you wasted a lot of words that could have been better used to support John & CJ for having the cajones to get together at all.

Terry,

You are right, most people live check to check, but as far as hobbies go, some people collect clothing or shoes. I know that I do (the shoes, not clothing).

In the world of shoe collecting $300 is a small small price to pay for a pair of shoes that you like or that are limited editions/runs.

when I was rich . . .

Terry,

I went out and spent a bundle on clothes when I was seventeen and making money hand over foot. I wore some of the stuff once, some twice, and two shirts I liked for awhile. Some of the stuff I never wore. After that I realized I was a Wal-Mart t-shirt and Lee jeans kind of guy. My wife and children were clothed any way they wanted to be but I have always been happy being me. I was married in blue jeans, a t-shirt, and the half-round toed cowboy boots I wore to work and ride in, all new. My wife wore a gown. She was happy, I was happy, it was our gig.
