Ginacue pleads guilty

I had a murder across the street from my house a couple years ago - drug related. 2,600 people have been shot in one city - Chicago - so far this year.

I will sleep soundly tonight knowing the government has apprehended this old man who makes pool cues. I feel a lot safer.

I'm really not sure about that logic. He never said it wasn't a federal charge.

He said the cue maker might have been trying to avoid the state deadline.

Screwed up federally trying it.

Makes sense..

Same way I read it. Very possible.

Matt....read the link Joe posted. The answers are all there. None of the above came into play. He also admitted to doing the same thing in the past. As much as you hate the new California law...this case had nothing to do with it.

You can write as slowly as you'd like. Try writing as slow as you read.

Duh.

I read all of it too.

Still does not change the notion he may have been trying to sell off material before the deadline.

Not that it matters anyway.

My thoughts exactly.

Makes me want to shoot a couple elephants.

It actually doesn't really make much sense at all if you think about it. The evidence is overwhelming that Ernie knew for many years that it was a serious federal crime to sell ivory that was intended to leave the country and yet for many years he chose to do exactly that anyway. What was the California law going to do to change anything regarding this transaction? Make this already illegal transaction illegal?

Ernie didn't care when this type of transaction was illegal under the far more serious federal law/jurisdiction so what makes you think he would suddenly care when it becomes illegal under a less serious state law? Common sense says that in regards to this particular transaction he didn't care about the impending state law any more than he cared about the old federal law that already covered it. The impending state law appears to be little if any factor at all here.

It was probably closer to 16 cues.

16 butts with ivory in them, plus 2 shafts each that had matching trim rings that also contained ivory. That would be 48 "sections" of cues.

Or it could have been 8 cues, with 2 shafts each and matching joint caps for all pieces.

Then again, the article says "almost 4 dozen sections of cues," so who knows what it actually was...

According to the Criminal Complaint document posted by classiccues, Liu and Chen were arrested with "44 sections of pool cues." 41 of these had been purchased from Gutierrez -- 12 completed pool cues with 2 to 3 shafts each.

Ernie knew this, Ernie didn't know that
:barf:

WTF people,

The poor old guy just got held up for extortion
and all you can do is whine ???

How about stepping up and helping him with the costs ?

Ernie,

If you are reading this, please contact me and I will pay
you up front for a cue as we discussed. I no longer care if
it has any dead elephant in it or not.

Whether or not people like the law or think it is a good one is one thing. But what is clear and not debatable by anyone that has seen the evidence is that he is guilty, and that there was no "extortion" or "entrapment" as has been thrown around. Drama much? Let's at least stick to the facts and reality.

We all know who they think the real victims are here - and it isn't the elephants.

To be more precise, of the twelve completed Ginacues involved in this transaction, seven of them came with two shafts, and the other five of them came with three shafts. All of the butts and shafts had ivory in them. These twelve completed cues along with all of their shafts are what the government collectively refers to as "forty one sections".

oK.. first things first.. I think Ernie knew where the cues were going. But probably figured I sold them here, and what they do with it after, is up to them. But if his e-mails, which is what is sounds like shows, that he did know then there is nothing he can really do.

That being said... this must be the stupidest (......long racist descriptive narrative) on the PLANET. With all the ivory laws being instituted throughout the US, and the ones that are already in place WTF was he thinking? To try and get on a plane with a loaded dufflebag of cues full of ivory. For Christs sakes you can't bring 4 oz of water on a plane.

Now had they bought seats for their cues, and went in explaining that they were pool players and this was their personal equipment, that they earn a living with, they MIGHT have had a better chance of getting through.

I had no idea they were shooting Dumb and Dumber III

BTW think about it, all the ivory threads, what have we said... ASIA is the biggest ivory market.. so WHO tries to get on a plane with a duffle bag full of ivory cues.... TWO ASIANS.. I got jokes for years now..

Might as well have been two Arabs with a duffle bag full of flares under a clock....

Ridiculous...

Now that's some funny stuff right there. You do realize all the cues were in checked bags and not in carry on though right?

wasn't as good for them as it is for us

Ernie took a chance on making a big sale with some degree of risk involved. He understood the risks and took his chances. Only this time it backfired on him and for that he will pay dearly. I suspect many (if not most) on here have done something similar at one time in their life. The temptation of making a big score can cause us to take chances we might otherwise not take. I think it's called gambling! Of course none of us are familiar with that word.

Ernie's my buddy and I wish him the best. In fact, maybe I will visit him and buy one of his remaining cues (without ivory!)

Actually it makes plenty of sense. But as I said, it does not really matter anyway.

Actually it makes plenty of sense. But as I said, it does not really matter anyway.

For it to make sense you have to assume that he was trying to ditch as much ivory as possible before the state law because he was planning to stop using ivory altogether. And to make that assumption, you also have to assume that it was because he was wanting to abide by the new state law. Considering that for many, many years he never cared the least bit about the federal law with even more severe penalties this would be a pretty silly assumption to make. It just doesn't come even remotely close to passing the common sense or logic test. This transaction would have occurred exactly when it occurred and exactly how it occurred even if the state law had never come along. You are right though, it really doesn't matter at all why he did it. He knowingly broke the law, got caught, and is dealing with it.
