Selection for the two sides hots up in September and the US Open, which concludes on October 24, will be the final event to have an impact on Mosconi Cup spots.
With debate raging Stateside as to who should gain the coveted positions, Mosconi Cup promoters Matchroom Sport will be taking the democratic process to the American nation by allowing the final Mosconi Cup spot to be determined by public vote.
Taking place at the Studio Ballroom at the fabulous MGM Grand, the Mosconi Cup will get underway at 11am local time on Thursday, December 10 and continue for four days of never-say-die pool action.

If for whatever reason you are not selected for the team, the 2009 Mosconi Website indicates that the American Public will get a chance to vote for the last remaining spot. Therefore, we just need to wait and see what happens until then.
It is my belief that Matchroom selects SOME players for the team based on their accomplishments during the past year but don't take my word for it. Other players are selected by Matchroom themselves. Based on the following statements at the Website, it looks like the selection process MIGHT be different this year. I do hope you make the team.

Strictly from the perspective of a fan, I want to see Earl on the team before anyone else.
Yeah, he's volatile and unpredictable and he can be a jerk, but he brings personality to the game (how you feel about that personality is your own affair
).
NEVER was tennis more popular than when John McEnroe was in his heyday- did people love him personally? Some did, many didn't, but EVERYBODY watched his matches- he brought a whole generation to their television sets on week-ends (I used to watch him, and I was never a fan before he started playing), and many of them took up the game.
Like McEnroe, Earl is a polarizing figure- love him or hate him (I love to watch him play) he brings interest and coverage to the sport (and, since he has the skills to back up his antics, that's not necessarily a bad thing)- anything that increases viewership and interest in pool is, in the end, good for everybody- the robot-like play of many Asian players is pretty tough to watch at times as it's boring (even though the quality approaches perfection occasionally) and doesn't make you really want to get into the poolroom- Earl makes you feel like picking up a cue and learning the game.

Since Donnie doesn't fly, if it is in Europe he will need a few weeks extra notice for the ocean voyage.

I hope Earl Strickland and John Scmidt are on the team. But I really hope they stick to whatever point system that they have setup. I would hate to think of the guy who had the qualifying points but got bumped due to a donation.
