Pro Pool players courting disaster

...What's Earl Strickland's middle name - 25th caller wins - going all the way back to radio methods........

I win. I win. I win. His middle name is, uh, EARL!

:happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance:

[Thanks, Mark.]

What do I get for my prize, John? :p

:) I just realized what the question was. kinda funny how your mind can make you hear something else.

Well Back to Bonus Ball. Looks like it will be kicking off tomorrow. I saw a pic on facebook from yedterday with a bunch of players watching at the arena and some players playing in team shirts. Probably just going through a dress rehearsal of sorts I imagine. I could not tell properly from the pic I saw but it looked like I saw Nigel reese reffing the match. Was I wrong my eyes arn't as good as they used to be :)

Can't wait to hear Earl tomorrow mic'd. There has got to be some clause in his contract to make sure he doesn't say something like, "Oh sure, anyone can beat me in some gaff game, but come get some on the ten footer playing ten ball..."

Tomorrow it all kicks off at 9 pm EST:

Archer, Hatch & Daulton

vs

Strickland, Kiamco & Nevel

Then our peanut gallery will have a whole new bushel of peanuts to fling about. :grin-square:

It's hard to handicap a game that's barely been played before, but I think I like the Scorpions in this one by just a little bit. Also, how has anyone not mentioned that "Courting Disaster" would be a great band/album name?

The rule is "People like people like like a part of themselves".

If I were to bet I'd say CJ is very familiar with the Internet. He has a successful online business, he produces video available on demand, & every post he writes looks like he built a mini website.

I think he also understands a thing or two about TV productions.

Yes, the key isn't just getting pool on TV, it's how you produce the shows to capture what the public wants to see.....and it's not pool. Something else MUST happen first.

I've shared the order of events that must transpire to capture the public's attention, and it's a model used by all the sports at their infancy stages.

The rule is "People like people like like a part of themselves".....and pool does represent a "Part" of the general public that's alluring....very alluring. The Sopranos Hit IT, and Dexter Hit another part of IT..Reality Shows hit "IT" too..it's just a matter of time for Pool too.....Remember, historically for anything to change it must get worse before it gets better......and I think we're going through this stage in the next few weeks.

One of the issues with the pool world's past strategy is be "exceptional" when it's best {sometimes} to "just do what the other sports have done". It's easiest to be successful by following a model of past successes. 'The Game is the Teacher'.com

Bonus Ball represents change, they still need to follow the PR&Branding rules and I have no idea if they will (just hope so), for the mean time it's going to be interesting to see what develops. The best thing is it's Different, that's at least on the right track.

Yeah, why fly all the way to Tunica and take a shot at 28 grand, and maybe 30 or 40 more in the Southern Classic, when you can stay in Vegas and get your thou a week and give it to the casinos.

Heck, if it last two months you'll have made eight grand! And maybe still have 800 in your pocket. Go for it!

Jay the players won't lose it in the casinos. They won't have time to go over there. They will be training hard every day, 10 - 12 hours a day just like a boxer or UFC fighter does.

This is exactly my point. Everyone knows how the majority of players conduct themselves. I pumped up to this or blew that stories. Just earn your pay and keep it moving. All these years in and nothing to show for it except some good stories and burnt bridges.

Watchez sums up exactly what I'm saying and so does Jay.

And Mikey, none of them will be getting a $1000 a week. Uncle Sam will get his share first and foremost - something that a pool player is not used to when he wins a tournament for the similar amount. They will probably clear about $700 a week, give or take.

p.s. A lot of casinos will cash paychecks for an added convenience just in case there is a casino on the way home from the BB arena to the players apartment.

Speaking of good band names, I thought of a good one when thinking about Bonus Ball paychecks going to the casinos...How about, "The Enablers"?

THEY ALL HAVE PAYCHECK CASHING PROMOTIONS,

I passed out 700-900 paychecks a week for 8 years, and 200-400 for the other 4 years, I had 3 people on autodeposit and the rest ALL cashed them at a casino period no EXCEPTIONS!!!!! they keep them broke, its the greatest thing in the world. Cause i knew they would be back to work for me on monday morning, 'd lose one every couple weeks, they book a winner and think they dont need a job-for a few days then they come back to work begging for their shit back. its a treadmill in Vegas. I exploited that.

One thing is for sure....if they don't get the taxes taken out upfront you can bet your ass uncle sam will want their money at the end. BB might ruin the players lives in that way lol

And just wait to Player A that is the roommate of Player B goes to the casino to cash his payjcheck and loses his share of the rent and utilities at the end of the month.

Eric - how short of a leash does a landlord keep someone on in Vega$ that doesn't pay their rent? You really don't have to answer that cause I know the answer. Surely in Vega$ the occurrence of this isn't higher than the rest of the country.

Come on man the apa, bca, vnea are in town and the pros can go pump up in action. I've never walked in a gym or arena and seen lebron james offering 8 going to 10 to play him some one on one. Still can't figure out why though.

Justin,

Used to love to watch the TDF when the late announcer called the event. Can not remember his name but he also called the Mosconi Cup and Darts championships. How he made every mundane pass seem like it was the dash to the finish line kept me coming back for more. Not a bad idea for pool either. Maybe Joe Rogan? Howard Stern might be interesting. Bet there would be lots of scantily clad women running around the table.......... :embarrassed2:

Lyn

Sid Waddle ?

He was great, RIP !

the law is 3 day pay rent or quit, usually takes us 5-7 days to get a eviction. most landlord friendly state in America, and i still lost millions-brutal.

yeah that room mate thing will get long in the tooth in about 3 months.

like i said you cant commute to vegas and live elsewhere on a dime a week, i commuted for 19 years i know what i'm talking about. if a player decides to live in Vegas a dime/week is survival these days-consideering they dont play 52 weeks a year.

when i moved to Vegas the house man at the pool room amde more than a dime a week and rent was almost free-it was the easiest places to live possible-if you didnt have habits, those days are long gone there.

Agree

A great way for pool tournaments to draw crowds would be for vegas to get involved with placing odds on the players similar to snooker. It seems like a natural relationship, a game known for gambling and Vegas hooking up.

Unfortunately Vegas doesn't trust the players.

I watched a tournament on a live stream a few months ago and in the finals a couple well known players who traveled to the tournament together split the cash and didn't put forth their best effort.

Gee, I can't imagine why pool can't find major sponsors. It's a mystery.

I agree with you 100%..Dumping (STEALING!) is a huge reason why not only Vegas wont trust the players but if Pro Pool ever had a serious meeting with Marketing Directors of for example..Verizon, any Beer Co., Ameritrade, Nike..whomever...who did their research on the potential of viewership for a TV Deal and also the potential pitfalls of "getting into bed" with a new industry / Sport..(revenue stream) they would learn about the negatives as well as is their job and find out the risks..the largest risk (and black eye to the sport) which is "dumping" and probably take a quick pass.

Not enough reward to assume that risk.
