You're mistaking arrogance for insecurity. And while they often go hand in hand, they are NOT one in the same. Bill is an extremely arrogant individual. He's built up a huge reputation for himself as one of the elite cuemakers in the industry. And he knows it. He knows that some of his cues are the crown jewels in some very impressive collections. He's inspired others. He's pushed the envelope and broken new boundaries. His cues will still not only hold their value, they'll increase in value. He's just arrogant enough (and smart enough) to know that nothing will come of this. Collectors will still collect. A$$-kissers will still try to kiss his a$$. And now that he's retired and will be taking no more orders, he's got nothing to lose here and he knows it.
Dan...He just posted in kaznj's thread about greatest shotmakers. I reminded him about mhaimi's cue, but I'm not holding my breath, waiting for him to respond. :frown:

If Bill made a statement like, "I'm not going to supply the cue," would that clear this up?

I am not sure if things will ever be cleared up but in my opinion it would be the appropriate way to end this episode. If he has no intention to do what he promised to do he should say so and perhaps apologize for all the time spent by the AZ members that sent in designs. The member that won had to have been very excited and happy, but then to have received nothing with no apology is wrong on every level I believe in. Bill should do what many expect of him and that is to explain why he is unwilling or unable to fulfill the promise he made to build the cue for the winner of the contest he started.
What is there to clear up????
Are you asking if it will stop people from posting threads and pointing out continuously what an asshole move it is if he DOESN'T follow through on his self imposed obligation???
No one ASKED BS to create the contest and set the obligation on himself as far as I know, but as soon as he did, he set it upon himself to follow through.
If he doesn't, then I hope that a new thread is created every day to point out that he has yet failed to follow through on his self imposed obligation.

I think the statement doesn't really need to say that, it's pretty much universally understood. Something more along the lines of "I'm sorry" and maybe "I can't due to health reasons" would probably help. I'm sure there are plenty who wouldn't accept that though.
I don't think that many would consider that "acceptable", but if he at least would do the most basic of things like "I'm not going to be able to do it, and I apologize", at least it would be considered "enough" to stop all of this stuff.
Not addressing the situation is what is really compounding the whole problem.
Don't care if Mr. Stroud's cues were the best in the world and the best ever made. It doesn't change the fact HE is a piece of excretment.

Seriously, he got to be a "legend" in cue making by pioneering many designs and manufacturing techniques. No one has called into question his talents. Concurrently, Mr. Stroud promised to build a cue for the winner of a contest HE created and promoted. Two years ago!!! Not last month or even last year. If he wanted to retire, why hold the contest at all. Perhaps it was his way of giving all of the pool world "the bird". From what I've seen and heard, he's lacked "character" for a lot of years. Not just the last year or two. Perhaps you (and a couple of others) wish to bury your head in the sand and defend him to the death, I don't and won't. This is not about cue making. It's about personal integrety. Nothing more. If you wish to lie, cheat and steal from members of the AZ forums, be prepared for the backlash. Even if we are paper tigers.

Love to hear details about the character issues other than the dream cue. not saying it is not true but details please.
Talk to the people who are/were directly involved. Some of the leading cue collectors in the Northeast have personally described Mr. Stroud in less than flattering terms. From their personal dealings. Haven't owned a Joss West. Have no interest in owning one. Never even met the guy. Don't want to. Sorry, no dirt to dish.
