Worlds Greatest Player vs. the Peoples Champion

I want to bet someone that if Earl loses the first set, he wont want to play on the 9 foot diamond.

Route:357.1 miles, 5 hr 11 min
5 hr 17 min in current traffic conditions....

This is nothing to drive for a match like this. I can't wait to hear when the final date is set.

As far as a pick? mortgage money would be on SVB, and sentimental money on Earl. My thoughts are whatever the rules may be, it is VERY tough to beat SVB in a long race. It will take Shane about 1/2 an hour to find the best break, I bet he is somewhere working on it right now. It might be a softer cut break from the box leaving all the balls below the side pockets to negate the table size.

this will be awsome!

A 5x10 Diamond? That's a first! I'm happy for Earl that he proved he can win again, but I'm afraid he's biting off more than he can chew here. Some people just can't let go of the past. He's gonna get spanked again! Hat's off to Mike G. for putting this together. Should be a winner on the internet and DVD's.
I'm betting on Shane if anyone's interested.

You might be in for a surprise here, Jay.

This will be EPIC!

Hey Jay it aint much but I got 20 buckaroos on Earl against ya.

This is great. I'm glad Earl is getting back in the box. I hope it turns out better for him than it did when they played in 2007. Earl has always said that if pool was played on a tight pocket 5x10 no one would ever beat him. I guess this is his chance to prove it.

I'm with Disco. If Earl loses this one I bet he wants no part of Shane on the regulation size table. He already found out what that was like, to the tune of 100-60 something.

I'm delighted to see this match-up but I'm curious to know why they decided to play on a 5x10 table instead of a 4.5x9 table?

You know that most of American Pool History has been the 5x10 as the professional table. I grew up around them when I was a teenager. They were getting more and more rare as the smaller "bar tables" began to fill the rooms all over the country. They were in most of the places that had enough room and served liquor. I made a living at playing in bars every night and the pool rooms every day for 20 years. The pool rooms were now all converted over to the 4 1/2 by 9, now called the big table. The 5x10 is a true test of pool skills. Earl and Shane will no doubt give us a show that has not been seen in 100 years.

I do remember reading where Earl said if the pros played on 5x10 tables no one could beat him, that has to be his thinking that the bigger table will get to Shane. This is going to be Awesome, I hope it ends 100-99 Earl so they have to play again cause Shane will definitely want to play on a 4 1/2x 9 table.

That's a very accurate assessment Gerry.

Everybody likes SVB. His game and personality make him wildly popular. But who among Earl's legion of die-hard fans wouldn't love to see Earl catch one of his patented gears of yesteryear!

A great match up that's better late than never. Thanks Mike G & T.A.R.

Here we go. Earl will play SVB on a 5x10 Diamond, 10 ball, race to 100 in 3 days. They will play at Ice Breakers Billiards in Youngstown Ohio sometime in February, probably the 11th, actual date will be published next week. The rules are 6 inch break box, call shot with the option, 10 ball last and a 40 second shot clock with a referee. The original professional table will be the battle field, a 5x10. Now lets see who the greatest player is. One stipulation is that the player that loses has the option to play another race the very next weekend on a 4 1/2 x 9 Diamond. This will be live streamed and taped for DVD sales. Now were talking.

What 5'x10' Diamond are you talking about?...because Diamond has never built a 5'x10' of anything todate;)

Maybe I'm wrong here...but didn't SVB already play Earl a race to 100 10ball on a Diamond 9ft and beat him 100 to like 60 something? Maybe I'm just getting old and can't remember if they've already played each other or not;)

In my group lesson with Earl I remember him saying something like this,

"No one can putt like Tiger but they don't go making the hole bigger so everyone else can make tough putts too. If they had everyone play on 5x10s with 4" pockets I'd rob the world cuz no one can shoot as straight as me. See why won't they just let me rob people?"

I was mesmerized. Later he talked about how there should be a big shot clock that the audience could see.

So I'm so glad someone finally put a shot clock on one of these things.

Go Earl!

If that be the case, Earl would be dominating the world on slightly smaller tables with BIGGER 4 1/2" pockets...as straight in as he shoots...but, he's not...so I guess he's not shooting as "straight" as he use to. Does anyone really believe that the same advantages a 5'x10' table provides to Earl....wider spread breaks, less clusters, more room for cue ball control for cue ball position play....are a DISADVANTAGE to SVB?....really???

Now lets see who the greatest player is.

Please explain to me how Shane playing by all of earls crazy stipulations makes this worthy of crowning earl "greatest player"? If earl did win, it woulnt prove anything other than earl needs things his way to win. 15 years ago, earl would have played anyone on anything cause he knew he was the favorite against the world. Same reason Shane will play this. But this "greatest player" talk only means anything when Shane wins. It proves he can beat anyone (yet again) and willing to play anyone anywhere on anything.

Get up and play by common rules on a common table if you are trying to "prove" something. If you are just looking to gaffe your way into $10k, I don't think that will work out for you either.

I guess I haven't heard of a 5 X 10 Diamond. But if that's what it is, I CAN'T WAIT!!! Will definitely purchase this stream. Am buying popcorn this afternoon!

Well...it's not, so I don't know what they're playing on....but it's NOT a Diamond 5'x10' I can assure you of that;)

damn cleary you know more about pool than i thought.
good post

Thriller in Youngstown

Earl took Efren in his prime in the same situation and almost beat him. Taking nothing from SVB but usually the guy that goes looking for action and especially the same guy he lost too before wins, Hawiian Brian and the old school gang are very good at this. Kinda reminds me of Sugar Ray getting the particulars etc/ring size out of the way and winning. Earl's still in his 40's and we all know how well Efren played in his forties. Jay I'm down, I'll pm ya.
The most interesting thing about the ground rules is the shot clock and the time it takes to walk around a 10 footer. We all know Earls in shape too.
