I'm a lot more pissed off about the blatant disregard for the mollusks used in cue making. Abalone just minding his own damned business, not hurting anyone...POW, next thing you know, his shell is a bunch of inlays!

Rubber and plastics are also bad for bumpers, buttcaps, ferrules, joints, and such, as these are made from petroleum by products, which come from deposits of dinosaur bones. This is sort of like grave robbing, isn't it?

Cue tips are usually made from the domestic cow, and after seeing veal calves being mistreated, I can't hardly finish a triple cheeseburger anymore, let alone feel right about having leather tips or wraps on a cue stick...

The joint material in a metal joint usually comes from the mining industry, which we know works people to an early death with long hours and from inhaling coal and metal dust.

I've read David Kersenbrock's theories on trees and organic plants screaming and being miserable in his shop, so that does away with linen wraps and virtually anything wood in the cue.

I'm thinking of having my next cue made totally out of Play Dough, just because I don't have a freakin' clue what's in that stuff!

Would you own a cue with ivory or not? I personally have mixed feelings about it being an animal lover and I know that you can get pre-ban ivory but either way we know where it came from and you cannot be sure it is actually pre-ban. I like the cues in the gallery with all the ivory in them but just have mixed feelings. Make your choice in the poll.

I love it, love it, love it, oh and did I say I Love it!!!!!!!:)

ivory use

I have been using Ivory since the 70's in one form or another.
The ivory we use is legal and so use it. Ther at one time was enough Ivory in the basement of the Mozembiue capitol to sell and feed everyone in Africa. The government there did not seem to care why should I. There are so many elephants now they eat the crops and people do with out. Do you really thin that is a good thing. Come on people.
Shoot the pochers the ones here and there and you don't have to worry about people wanting to poach it, if the punishment was bad enought like many other crimes as well.
God put it here to use or we would not be using it. Get off of the horse it is good stuff. I eat beef, pig, cat, and most other creatures that god gave us to survive on. PETA= people eating tasty animals.
THere is a lot available and I will buy it and use it as I deem necessary for its beauty and durablility.
YES YES YES YES YES YES use it use it, it is there. I think I heard a tree cryiing outside when a limb fell off I will see you later
Buy American, put everybody else out of work and walmart out of business

Not necessary......

I personally dont mind purchasing an already made cue that has ivory already in it, but as far as getting a new cue made, I would not have ivory put in it whatsoever. I BTW only have 1 cue out of my collection that contains ivory

I will never own a cue with ivory in it. Also pre-ban ivory does not change how it was harvested.

I have one cue with ivory in it. It was given to me by a pro player who got it from another pro player.

I wouldn't put ivory in a cue I had made for me because I'm a cheap bastard.

my reason in reverse

I'll put ivory gewgaws in cues simply because people pay ridiculous prices for a little ivory in a cue. Profit plain and simple. As has been established, we are using pre-ban ivory in the US. If I add up my total use of ivory over the years it won't begin to weigh as much as one decent set of tusks. Two or three ounces of ivory inlay in a cue is a bunch for a typical cue made in the US. Not uncommon for the little bit of ivory used to weigh less than an ounce. Benefiting from the death of one elephant isn't going to keep me up nights. I have benefited from the death of countless other animals and I don't put the elephant on a particularly high pedestal above other animals.

i agree with this all the way

Lenny, I voted no. I feel like there are plenty of man made materials to take the place of ivory, at least for pool cues. I have read many stories about ivory cracking under different temperatures or elevations, not to mention it adds to the cost of a cue.
As far as the hit/feel goes, ivory in the butt cap or joint are not going to affect the hit very much. The hit/feel comes mostly from the shaft of a cue or the tip. So it seems, other than cosmetics, or for collectibility, ivory does not do much for a pool cue. This is just my opinion, no facts to back it up at all.

I have to disagree. The hit of an ivory ferrule is unmistakable. I have never hit with anything that hits exactly like ivory. I like the hit of an ivory ferrule, but I am not too interested in an ivory joint. Inlays, ringwork, buttcaps, etc, I dont mind them, but I dont have to have them either.

I wouldn't buy a cue with ivory in it, nor would I commission a cue to be made that included ivory.

I'm fine with people eating animals, that's part of the natural order of things. People wouldn't have sharp teeth if we weren't meant to eat animals.

Using a dead animals body parts for something as insignificant as a pool cue is different, imo....especially if those animals are being killed specifically for their tusks, and their meat is left to rot.

I've never heard anyone say that elephant tastes good, so I see no reason to kill them.

You'd be surprised at how many villagers are fed with each and every elephant killed (the linked article says about 240 for a month). Usually, the hunter gives all the meat to the locals, and they will strip the carcass to bare bones with every man, woman, child carrying away as much as they can. Nothing, and I mean nothing goes to waste.

Elephants also have a hefty "trophy fee ranging from $11,000 - $17,000 which also helps the local economy. I don't see a down side to this, as African elephants aren't endangered at all...

I stand corrected, then. I was under the impression that hunters/poachers killed the elephants, chopped off their tusks, and went on their way.

If people are actually eating the meat, I can't condemn the hunting of elephants any more than I can condemn those who killed the pig that I just had for dinner...

I suppose, given that reasoning, ivory ferrules aren't any worse than leather wraps...

Thanks for the link.

I am pro-Ivory. I have 2 cues with Ivory and would have many more if my wallet was more accepting to the idea. :sorry: I agree with Steve (Hunter).....alot of good points.

If ivory was not a banned substance then African Elephants would very likely be an endangered species. The fact that they are not endangered today is because of the laws protecting them.

I like dogs and I like elephants. I wouldn't eat either animal nor would I use dog teeth in a cue.

> My only Schon has a lot of ivory in it,along with ivory ferrules. It's the nuts as a ferrule material,in fact I'll never use anything else. I see no problem with it,because I understand how old it has to be for use in cues. Chances are,it was harvested before I was born,so in my mind,I didn't contribute to the killing of such an animal. I don't want any ivory. It makes my stomach queasy. I don't say it's 'wrong', I can't dictate morals. I just don't like it and am not going to do it. It doesn't feel right to me.

green ivory aint worth a quarter, it has to sit for 10 years minimum, 20 is best. I have 10 tusks from elephants i shot, none of it is suitable for yse yet.

"elephants"....lol

Was killing the first one so much fun you just couldn't wait to bag another?...
