now you just match up super tough and bet super high.

I remember Jimmy Red, tell him "hi" as well, we both knew Geraldine Titcomb (Ladies Billiard Champion)
and I was with her daughter for a couple of years....talk about "Smokin Hot" :grin-devilish:

There's only a handful of Hustlers/Road Players left these days - it was an art of the 80s, now they just match up super tough and try to bet reasonably high.

So What your saying is that you know how tedder and scooter play and your going to offer them a game they cant win. Your not going to offer them a game that u feel your gonna lose at. That would be like me saying to you I would play you and I want 12-6 and the breaks playing one pocket because I know how you play but u have no clue how I play but I know you cant win. Its almost pointless . Because scooter aint coming unless he has the best of it and you aint Playing unless you have the best of it. This challenge will not be accepted bt scooter and you know it and you knew it prior to posting so I just dont see the point.

Bottom line is if you can't play straight up then someone's game (Scooters) isn't good enough.

Just sayin

.theres not ONE retired gambler -hustler of pool in the galaxy.....so to all you who travel that road ...snap the the **** out that dream or you will be another broke poolroom bum...

Jack Cooney and Artie Bodendorfer come to mind. Both were hustlers who seem to be doing okay. What about Billy I.? I would say there are some out there but the percentages are probably .000001% you can retire off hustling pool.

I told scooter about this post he said exactly this in a text: "lol that's funny just ask cj Wiley one question... how much money has scooter robbed john for... A LOT!"

CJ what about this from Scooter? How did they play?

Best drunk player was Peru paul hands down strong arm will testify to this. He drank a half gallon a day of bourbon and could run strings of 8 to 10 packs on the bar table. He was a really good bar table player. Another good biter was Charlie Brenson, ask john about him too john said he was one of the few that could bite him. A lot of people would have a 20 in their hand when he approached. About paul there are drunk players like scotty who might've played better but definitely not if they drank drink for drink with him. He once was playing in the finals of a regional tournament dropped his cue and couldn't find it someone in the stands gave it to him and he went on to win the tournament.

All true...... One time at Stepletons I'm sitting with Cornbread and Bucky Bell getting schooled and Paul walks up and sits down, then Paul starts talking. Like, talking normal, carrying on a conversation talking.... I'm like "Wtf, Paul? What gives with talking?". He was like"You gotta catch me before I start drinking!".

No doubt Cliff learned how to bite from Charlie Brinson!!! Plus, Charlie had his pimp game to boot..... That guy was a hoot!

I agree Lenny. And the fact is Artie beat most everyone he played at pool, he finally gave it up and went to Vegas where he literally "robbed" the sports books with his system bets. It was brilliant, and it changed the Vegas sports books lines in the process because of the weakness he exposed. He mad millions in the process. Long story short, he's persona non grata at every casino in Vegas. He can eat there, he just can't gamble at any of them. Don't want to go too deep without the OK from Artie though ;)

JAM...Wow...whoever did write this doesn't have a clue. Anton is so far from even WANTING to be a hustler, that it's stone cold funny (yeah he did write a 'handbook' on hustles, that lots of people wrote to him about)! What he really is, is an excellent professional magician (read: has a real job), and a fine poolplayer. He makes a great living being a pool entertainer. He himself would have a long laugh at being called a "notable real-life hustler"! LMAO

Notable real-life hustlers:

Chef Anton, trick shot artist and author of several hustling manuals

This isn't a challenge to "put on a show" for a bunch of people, it's to prove who's the best....it will NOT be streamed, televised or broadcast in any way, shape, or form.

Then you should have sent them a post card or fed ex overnight letter to their car and left it off of AZ where inquiring minds want to know

Touche'

We had a good time in St. Louis, it had been a long time since I saw "C"....he was running around with Rusty Brandimere last time I saw him.

Does Rusty still come around, say "hi" to him, we made a lot of money on the road back in the mid 80s.....I'll always remember the BUSYBODY LOUNGE in Evansville, it was very, very, good to us.

Rusty has owned a very successful pool league in this area for quite some time. He obviously doesn't play anymore. The last time I saw Rusty play was probably over a decade ago. He came out for a regional event that had many top players in attendance. Rusty at that time hadn't played in years as well. He made them all look like they couldn't play and robbed the tournament. His pool was literally beautiful to see. I haven't heard of him playing since.

Next time I see him, I'll give him your best.

CJ, care to address this?

The best pool hustler in the country?
....nobody knows him.
He might be the guy who took all your cash last night....
...and you have absolutely no respect for him...
.....you probably think you can give him serious weight....
.......if only you had some money left.

FAMOUS pool hustler is a contradiction in terms.

To an extent I agree that there are some unknown monsters, but the ones who are the best also have stories told about them by people who were there to witness it. That part of the hustle life is unavoidable.

At sounds like this is a matchup thread, not a who can hustle who thread, two totally different things.

Peru Paul, yep he played awesome.

He never looked like he was comfortable or enjoying it, but would string racks together.

I think there is a HUGE difference between a great "hustler" and a great "gambler." The best gambler in this country is without a doubt, SVB. He plays anyone, on their table, with their format, for big money and wins! No laying down, no moves, no tricks, just here I am, I play better than you, flip it!

When you're robbing drug dealers, pimps, bookies, card players and people who gamble in general it's okay to be proud. "Real" hustlers aren't out trying to beat a guy out of his diaper money.

Damn! How did you know who I was playing way back then? That is the only people who had the "real" cash. Everybody else worked for a living and held on to their money a bit closer. The people you just described obtained their money rather "easily" and let it go rather quickly and "easily".

You played the diaper-money guy on off days. :)

My take on Hustler v. Road Player

The thread has been derailed a bit into what I see as 2 totally different categories.

You have the road hustler, who drums up games, usually has to play B player speed and match up A player speed, and needs to be incredibly personable for times when he needs a walking stick, a bite, place to stay, etc.

You have the Road Player, who back in the time I was traveling around was a player who would go to tournaments from city to city (think of John McChesney Texas Express Tour (we followed that from beginning to the end))

While at the tournaments you would match up before, after, heck even during, to cover the expenses, and get ahead for the next spot. A lot of times you'd be putting your whole bankroll (minus gas money to get home) on the line with nowhere to sleep that night, no food to eat, etc.

I've traveled with CJ before on the road (and I doubt he could pick me out of a lineup of 2 people) I've traveled with John before, and know him well. Also traveled with the rest of his "crew" (I'm guessing Doug is somewhat a part of that crew)

Who the best is, is rather subjective. The amounts thrown around today, are amounts that a lot of players cant come up with. Good players who just don't have 20k laying around cant get played because they wont "bet enough" $100 one pocket is just hitting balls around in a lot of people's book.

The market has now set the bar, if it isn't a match for 10k, 20k, 100k, then no one wants to watch. Exhibition, bah humbug in their eyes, because there could be a chop or it just isn't enough on the line.

Paul could drink a lot, and he was ornery when he was losing, but a ball to be around when he was either not playing or buzzing. The good thing about Paul was that he ran around with Danny, and Danny could play. You would BEG to play Paul, he looked literally like Paul Bunyon. Tall, flannel shirt, scruff on the face, etc.

I remember back when John had Sticks and Stones and Doug and I were "managers" I LOVED that job. If I could have any job in the world ever, it would be going back to that age and running that pool room for John. If someone wants to ever write a good pool book, you could write it about Indy and the pool scene.

Man, are you ever a proponent to anything ever posted on AZ?

Sorry, but it just seems like you always oppose everything.

Nice idea CJ comes up with and you are such a drag.

Why would you, someone claiming to want to promote pool, equate gambling on a match to hustling? Just because some other guy did? Surely you must know the difference between the two.

Second, what makes you think that even if you won ONE match against him, that would make you the best gambler? Everyone loses once in a while. The best is the guy that wins more often than he loses. One match does nothing to determine the best at gambling.
