**BARRY SZAMBOTI**New**SHOULD THIS GET CHALKED

Like someone else said. Why get such good shaftwood for it to just sit? for that matter, you would not even need to get shafts...haha

BTW,

What are the opinions of effected value. Lets say you have a brand new cue from top cuemaker that you could sell for $5000. How much would chalking it and playing with it effect value? 10%? more? Less?

To me, as long as the butt is mint and the shafts are full size, I don't mind how much it was played before I owned it.

Ian

oh..

and by the way if you do not play with the cue you will likely go to hell!!!

LOL...Steve hope to see some of that collection soon brother!

I'd say play with it for sure 100% and if you need someone else to hit some balls with it first, just shoot me a PM.

22 year old shaft wood, and you're not going to use it? It is your cue, but ........

Exactly, why bother with older shaft wood just to sit? I think it is a shame all cues don't get to do what they were made to do, play pool.

Beautiful cue btw

The old Gus shaft wood was a treat to me from Barry. It certainly makes the cue much more valuable and collectable. After being friends for about 20 years, I dont think Barry is concerned about weather I play with this cue or not.

I also maintain that many people who would pick this cue up, with all intentions of playing with it, that upon seeing the incredible beauty and the workmanship.....there hands would start shaking, and they would put it down...............LOL

Yep

There are some AND I used to think that way but not me anymore, life is way to short...before you know it, its all over...even if you live a LONG life, its pretty damn short.

Great cue Steve, I'd fire this one up and get it dirty. Barry sure is doing some great new touches on his designs.

Someday when Barry finish's a cue he is building for me you can be sure i'm going to play with it. I'm really looking forward to playing with it.

Also I have about 15 Barrys that are unchalked locked in the vault. they are older cues and thats how I bought them-new never chalked, most of them are are bigger than this cue than Steve just got, so they are more collector kinds of cues, not player cues at all.

What sucks is the Vault isnt in my house anymore. They are in a high security art collection vault place I rented space in. So I can only get to them during biz hours. they are safe for sure but I cant get to them easy. It does bother me that they are unplayed but its also hard for me to take a 15 year old loaded 8pt Barry thats brand new and chalk it up and use it. I know I'm not going to use it as a daily player, So once I chalk it up and play with it then its cherry got popped and for what? I cant seem to make sense of using a cue like that, but at the same time It bothers me that a great cue isnt being used.

I do have some Very Fancy Barrys that have been played with and I have played with all of them,

Since this cue is new I'd say go ahead and play with it, you have some unplayed Barrys,

you have one hell of a cue collection Steve, Wow. I still have NOT made it to the City yet, when I do I'll let you know.

Seeing that he Steve got this cue 3 months ago, he probably already made up his mind on whether to play with it or not. if he hasn't he could always put on another Szam shaft and play with it. Should play the same exact way.
Regardless of what Steve does, He has a great collection.

One more thing, I love the brown bumper thats a nice touch.

I just read the LOA and its Gus wood, now you have to play with it, a old wood cue like that will out play that cue if Barry built it with new wood. Old wood just sweetens up over time. This is a fancy players cue IMO. The Brown bumpers last longer than the Altas black ones do(they are a better rubber compound). And you have JP's the whole bit. Those are the reasons to play with this cue. If Barry would have built it out of neweer wood then I still would said play ieth it, but now that I know its gus wood i'm telling you "Go play with it" ;) :), I want first dibs on it if you ever decide to sell it, I waited for a Gus for 16 years before a guy sold it to me, So i'm not in a hurry.

Thats one hell of a cue.To give you a little insight into just how much Barry has improved I'll tell a little about what I have so I have factual proof Barry has really stepped up his cues from day one, but in the past few years he has really turned on the jet fuel. I have one of the first cues he ever built, cue #100, cue #400, tribute to dad cue, a box cue from 3 years ago and lots of cues from the first ones(a satin finish 4 point hopie) to a 3 year old box cue, every year his cues are getting better and better, And the first ones were awesome. how strong is that??

congrats

I guess if you get a lot of enjoyment out of just admiring it, then that's what makes you happy, and is great. For me though, I get more enjoyment out of playing pool with a really good hitting cue. And I really do not care what it costs, I would play with it. No cue I have hit with has ever made me nervous, a few Balabushka cues, Gus, high dollar Josey, etc.. It did not matter.
As said above in one of the posts life is very short and after we are gone, they are just a hunk of wood, no matter how "pretty" or who made it.
So who are we collecting the stuff for? People we don't know to play pool with it after we are gone?

I would freeze it........ Keep it preserved like a dinosaur!
Of course I am kidding.
Chalk that bad boy up, if it's investment your worried about I think it will always be worth the same whether it has been test hit or un-chalked. Jmo of course.

Hi,

Barry has the formula down for making the best hitting cues to a world class standard. Being a cue maker that learned from his dad and continued that legacy and making it better was Barry's Challenge.

Image being Jack Nicklaus's son, the trying to make you way in the golf world and then succeed to as level higher than your dad. That's pretty heady stuff but Barry did it and made his own respected name

I am sure anyone who ever played with one of his cues would agree.

Go ahead and play with it. After the first dent on the table it gets easier to handle. But guess what, you can have it refinished to brand new condition at any time thereafter.

Enjoy that great cue.

so

Eric, I keep hearing the "Im coming to NY speach" where the hell are you my friend....LOL Anytime is good for me, just let me know...we can drive up and see Tony also

Ernie told me that if you don't play the shafts, they go bad

Barry said it makes him happy to see his cues played

Some people claim that the value is affected when you olay with a cue,you would know better than me,but I think this does not apply to the upper tier of cue makers.
Barry Szamboti is at the very top of that group,if it were my cue I would not hit it just to say I had hit it,but if there was even a shall chance thhat it might be my player,
then I would hit it

You don't really need this advice as you know everything there is to know about fine cues
Thank you again for sharing the pictures and allowing the rest of us to share the joy of at least seeing the cue

Dean

I feel sorry for Barry. He is making cues that are meant to be played with, but because of the market, people are using them as investments.

The people that Barry graces with a cue can turn around and make a bigger profit than Barry did while he sweated out the details.

I don't know about anyone else but I never see anybody playing with a Szamboti, and that's a crying shame. I'm one of the guilty ones myself, but in these crazy times if anyone knew I was playing with a 12K cue, I'd have to back out of the poolhall and carry heat just to get to my car.

At least his Dad's cues got played with.........JMO
Tommy, this is a great post. I got a chuckle out of the way you'd have to leave the pool hall. I think Steve should play with this cue. What if you met with a bad accident or a severe health problem then your chance to enjoy such a wonderful cue would be gone. PLAY with it.
