Danny DiLiberto almost died!

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!

My dear friend Danny DiLiberto just called me to let me know he just got out of the VA Hospital in Buffalo NY. He had an internal hemorrhage and was bleeding profusely. Then when he got home he found out about the BCA passing over him for the Hall Of Fame after he was told they were going to induct him in a special category this year and instead put Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart in instead. That almost killed him as well! I've totally lost every bit of respect for the BCA and the way it's so politically motivated. The way they screwed over Danny and put in 2 guys who have been sucking the blood and money out of pool for over 20 years just makes me sick!

Anyway, please keep Danny in your prayers, he's 75 years old and not out of the woods yet. His health is declining and he has no income other than a few lessons now and then and his commentary for Accu-Stats, which isn't nearly enough to survive on. He feels like the BCA just slapped him in the face again with this years inductees, and I totally agree! He's given the biggest part of his life to pool and doesn't deserve to be treated this way!

Get well soon Danny
I'm curious if most pool players would even know who Terry Bell is ? Maybe they all do and I just don't know it . I'm just curious

I hope Danny gets better and can make it to many more events. He is a special guy. I hope he lives for another 75 years :)

PS. Care to elaborate on the so called "political motivation" behind inducting the two others over Danny? Making such claims (regardless if they are true or not) is not very useful without including the justification behind the accusations.

thank you for the information....Danny is a Special Man and a True Hall of Famer !!

i will keep him in my prayers !

What makes a person a BCA hall of fame candidate. It's obvious in other sports but the billiard hall of fame seems to take on a different route to the inductee's.

First and foremost, get well soon, Danny D.

To my knowledge, there are just two categories for BCA HOF induction, for play and for meritorious service.

The incomparable Danny D would be a very fitting addition to the HOF in either category, but I have to disagree strongly with the poster who suggested that Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart are undeserving. Given how much the APA, the organization they founded, has meant to our sport for decades, I find it astonishing they are not already in the BCA HOF.

Why is this not surprising? I said years ago when I published All About Pool that Larry"Boston Shorty" Johnson would be the last of the old time gamblers inducted into the Hall. That only "industry" people would go in in the future. Danny D in his time and in his way was a standout player and anyone that has an understanding of pool and its history would recognize why someone like Danny should be honored.

Hope Danny gets better always enjoyed his coomentary on accustats tapes . As for the other two can you at least clarify your remarks as to their actions re pool . I understand they played a roll in starting the APA .

Just tell me one thing they've done that wasn't completely self motivated! And don't try to say they've brought a lot of new people into the sport. They ONLY did that to line their own pockets by using the "23 rule" to split and divide teams forcing them to find bangers with low handicaps so the teams could field legal teams. All they ever cared about was the money they could put into their own pockets. They've done nothing to help the sport, they punish their members for improving using the "23 rule" like a pyramid scheme to get rich in the process! They've done more to bring the sport down than anyone in history! Don't get me started on them, I don't want to turn this into a flame war!

Here's the press release from July 27th about this year's HOF inductees: http://www.azbilliards.com/2000storya.php?storynum=7819

There are several details in there that are at odds with comments made here.

Maybe someone who knows Danny's career well should write a nomination for him in the Veteran's category. Without a solid nomination, I think it's hard for anyone to get in.

I see Danny a few times a week, the majority of the time he spends in the billiard parlor is helping people.Yes he does give a few lessons here and there but he is not living off it.Ask him a question about a shot and before you know it he has spent an hour with you.He still has a great eye and smooth stroke. He is a great story teller of days gone by and his knowledge of the game seems never ending.

Get well my friend, you are missed at the hall

So the criteria is you have to be at least 40 and have had been pro for 10 years and racked up some good wins. That says it's for the greatest player category which is something in itself correct? There have been lots of great players over the years and it actually would make just as much sense to have a players hall of fame and contributors hall of fame. It is far to difficult to determine who is more deserving of induction when there are multiple factors taken into account. Bustamante is a better player than Hubbart and Bell but is he a better player than they are entrepreneur's. There has been lot's of talk throughout the years on who was the best in a certain era or in their prime who is the best of all time. Efren obviously stands out and that why he was inducted in 2003. Just out of curiosity and for those who know Danny D better than the majority of people, how good was he in his prime.

YES someone please do this !

Danny D has my vote and if he gets to read this, get well very soon my friend.

Danny

I have been around this game for more than 40 years and I have never known a player in his 70s that matches Danny's prolific enthusiasm, interest, and energy for the game. It is going to take a lot to knock Danny out. He has got a lot more teaching to do, stories to tell, and pool to play. Danny is one of pool's living treasures. Get well, We need ya.

On a side note, I started this thread more than a year ago.
