Derby City Ten Ball Invitational

you think efren is still capable of winning a tourney like this now?

Absolutely. Two years ago people were counting Efren out because of the health problems and age. Then he won the Fatboy challenge. He was in the running for the All-Around (biggest prize at the DCC) so then he goes out and wins the 9-ball event for good measure.

I'd never count Efren out of anything. He's capable of winning any time he plays. Maybe the best pool player of all time! Still waiting to see if it will be him or Francisco in the final spot.

From his track record alone he is the best player of all time in an all around fashion. What is the determining factor of which one will play?

Man what a field..... I think if Efren or Buste don't show up u can toss me in there for light comedy.... Pretty sure that would be the end of my nerves issue one way or the other,,,for forever,,,,, LOL

Open it up

The DCC is one of the largest draws of an organized pool event in the USA and while you have hundreds of players in attendence you want to run an invatational event of 16. This makes absolutely no sense and further proves what's wrong with the promotional aspects of pool today. This event could be so much more than it's going to be and if opened up to 32, 64, or even 128 players could actually put some decent money in a players pocket.

You have people begging to get in this event and posters on here lobbying to put certain players in and you're turning them away?????? If there's one thing we hear all too often about pool is there's no money in the game, here we have a chance to make a pretty sweet pot much sweeter and we're not going to do it because we have no time!!!!

You put this kind of money in an event like this and players will play around the clock and run from event to event......they do anyway. It can be done you're just choosing not to. What a shame an waste of a great opportunity.

I can understand your view, but this tournament, I think, is a different kind of tournament than the open events. I believe it is supposed to be a showcase of top pool talent for DCC attendees to have an opportunity to watch up front and close.

Though most pros do compete in all DCC opportunities, e.g., banks, one-pocket, 9-ball, this invitational is that one tournament that narrows the field to the elite players from around the world. In this regard, it hopefully will guarantee some great back-and-forth battles on a field of green.

The majority of events, if not all, at the DCC are open to players of all caliber. Amateurs, social shooters, league players, and shortstops have many opportunities to compete against, say, Efren Reyes, Earl Strickland, or John Schmidt, thanks to the luck of the draw, and then there's those buybaks.

This invitatiional is not geared for players of all caliber for a reason. This invitational is an invitational because it guarantees the best of the best will be giving it their all, much to the delight of the pool fans. Since this is one of *the* biggest pool meccas each year, this invitational is really more like an exhibition of the very best pool has to offer in the year 2012.

Those are my thoughts, at any rate. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I think I'm right.

Ummm... are you aware there is already a tournament going on? That this is just a little mini-tournament that is meant to showcase a small number of the eliite players with a big buyin/big prize? You realize these players are already playing from 10am to around midnight or so? That it's important to do well in each event, as there is a big chunk of change given to the all around winner? You're proposing to run a whole other tournament on top of the tournament already being run. So the players, the fans and the all the people involved in running the tournament, need to get up around 7-8 am and could possibly be up until 4 am or so?

Myself, I want those elite players to be matching up gambling if they're up to it. There's enough tournament action already... the Derby is special, in that it's similar to the legendary Johnston City Tournaments, in which everyone came together for a extended amount of time to gamble and have a tournament too. There's enough tournaments already... let's get these guys together and have them match up to do some hard core gambling!

I think it's fine the way it is. There's already a lot of stuff going on each day. I don't want to see anything more introduced that takes away from the players being able to possibly match up.

Thanks to CaliRed and Jam for answering skeeterpro. You're both on the money and I appreciate it. This is NOT an event for anyone to play in! It is indeed a special event that has been added as a special feature at DCC. There is really no other elite field like this all year. All these players are very busy with the other three tournaments, so this is one more competition on their plate this week. To win the Fatboy Invitational is an achievement, even with the "small" field.

I want to add a special thank you to Eric P. aka Fatboy for stepping up again and adding $5,000 to the purse. It was his inspiration three years ago to create a unique event in the pool world for only the very best players. And I think we've succeeded. Thanks Eric!

Well said. Everybody's busy, busy, busy at the Derby. There's the banks event, the one-pocket event, the nine ball event, Bob Jewett's straight pool challenge, Jay Helfert's one pocket challenge, numerous midnight minis, and, of course, the non-stop gambling action. Yes, the players have no shortage of events to play in, and have something to do 24/7 if that's the way they want it.

The ten ball event is meant for the most elite, and, frankly, I was disappointed when Jay indicated that it might go to thirty two players, which, I feel, would water it down. As presently constitued, every match will be a battle of two players that hold many titles. I've attended every one of the DCC ten-ball tourneys. and this event is so special because its a small field invitational with invitation based on merit. I've always been amazed by the fact that players who are busy all day with their matches manage to find the energy to play races to fifteen in ten ball at midnight.

I wish there were more small invitationals with invitation based on merit. The Challenge of Champions at Mohegan Sun is a good example, with this year's event, played in October, consisting solely of the defending champion, the World 10-ball champ, the World 9-ball champ and the US Open 9-ball champ.

Warren Kiamco is the final entrant in our field this year. You can check on post #1 to see the entire field.

Efren should be there, its not the same without him. But,thx Jay,I love this event. And Thanks to Fatboy for dishing out dough at the beginning to get this as popular as it has become.

I don't think FB has anything to do with this event.

Correct me if I am wrong.... "I am wrong!!!! lol"

Edited after I read post #91 !!!!!! :)

Jay,

Brendan Crockett, only 16 years old, finished very high in the money at the US Open. He beat Ronnie Wiseman and Mike Banks Jr. in the money rounds. His only losses were to Chris Melling and Stephen Cohen. If you need to get in touch with him, I can help you.

I like to see a good mixture of players: some from the Phillipines, some from Taiwan/China, some from Europe, from US, Canada, established champions, up-and-comers, etc...

Brandon Shuff also deserves a spot as I heard he finished 2nd last year? Efren, Earl are abviously other choices. Tough decision to make, Jay.

Is Brendan playing again? I heard he stopped...

Yep and he also bested Roberto Gomez year before last in the Predator 10 ball in PI.

Just a heads up on this upcoming event at DCC. Looks like it will be the best one yet! The entry fee is $1,000 with $10,000 in added money. Only sixteen players, single elimination, race to fifteen. First will pay $12,000, second $7,000 and third-fourth $3,500.

Players entered already include: Mika, Ralf, Johnny, Dechaine, Alex, Shane, Darren, Lee Vann, Rodney (defending champ), Big D (Dennis H.), Corey, World Ten Ball champ Huidji See, Stevie Moore, Brandon Shuff and Dennis Orcollo. Warren Kiamco has filled our final spot.
What a killer line-up Jay, even without Efren and Earl! congratulations
