Not to pry or be overly nosey but, how does or how did Billy get deep pockets? Commentating, investments, years of hard work? I just dont see accu-stats shelling out the big bucks for commentators, but i guess if you do it year round at all the big tourneys it will pay off.

i know he just opened a room and although he probably has investors and loans it still could not have been easy on the wallet,

The main reason i ask is because maybe like many of you i would like to open a room when i retire or get close to retirement and would just like to see how one certain individual did it.

geez, I was mainly asking as a form of seeking advice. he obviously has the right not to answer and honestly I don't expect him to.

are you his accountant or bodyguard or something? when I ask you how you have money then you can flip out.

Fred I think Billy was 1 set winners when he got the eight from Efren. They played three sets and Billy won two. Efren only missed like three balls the entire time to come up loser. Nineball Billy played pretty sporty but heck that was a lifetime ago. Phil

No, I think there was more to your question. I think it was too personal of a question. If you want to make money, why don't you try to follow in the footsteps of Bill Gates. Why would you need to know how Billy I. got his?

You obviously don't hang out in pool rooms much. There you would have learned to not ask where someone gets their money.

If you didn't expect him to answer, why did you ask? Just to see what it would look like in print?

I see by your profile you are 25. If you grew up in the U.S. I find it hard to believe that you truly do not understand why that question is unacceptable for a stranger to ask. An unknown stranger to ask a well recognized person in the community on an open forum.

Besides with a name like kilojo420 it sounds like you already may have found a lucrative source of income.

By the way I hear that Billy got his stake by pitching quarters with Bill Gates. Closest to the wall for $1 Mil. a throw. He was all in on the first toss but Billy has heart and he pitches the hell out of those quarters. (That what you were looking for?)
 
yeesh let's all just overreact... I'm from the US and grew up with that question as being a big taboo too, but I never understood why. Nobody has to be ashamed of having or making money, unless they got it in some sleazy way (in which case the person ASKING isn't the one who should be embarrassed). I certainly don't get offended when anyone asks me.

The guy's probably just curious if commentating pays better than he thought, or if Billy's big bankroll is mostly from matching up well and smart side bets... he probably was expecting a dull stock market answer anyway.

Err, anyway, back on topic, it'd be neat if they record this and then they can do a player review on it after and sell it on accu-stats, if the chatter isn't too salty =)
 
I was raised never to ask someone what anything cost, much less where they got the money for something, unless it's a family member or a really close friend. The very rich consider discussing money at all to be gauche, and only the nouveau riche would do it in their eyes. We're talking pool players here, and can't expect too much, but some discretion should be shown. It's very rude, not to mention in extremely poor taste, to ask a businessman where he found the financial backing or wherewithal for a venture. In this particular business, where illegal practices abound, it's downright dangerous to discuss. Get some sense about ya' man...Tom

Sorry, I don't want to derail the thread, but this is something I've always wondered about.

I get that it's considered rude, I'm just puzzled as to why.
People ask all the time "what do you do for a living?" ... that isn't considered rude. That is practically the exact same question as "how do you make your money" (I think most people assume you make your money from your job)

If you're saying a person in the pool world might have made his money some other (illegal way)... I guess asking him the innocent question might put the guy on the spot and make him feel embarassed, but we're all pool players here and I don't think anyone would be embarrassed to say "I made a ton of money from pool action". In fact it's something they might say with pride.

Really I don't put "where'd you make your money?" any higher on the offend-o-meter than "where'd you buy those shoes?" I'm just applying the golden rule and asking myself honestly "if someone asked me this question, would I feel offended?"
 
Billy Is Not Even Close To A Lock Artist.

Billy Inc. was at the tournament I played in this weekend in Mobile, AL. Don't let anyone tell you that Billy is a lock artist. I was on the one yard line, when the negotiating was done and there when the competititon began and there when it ended, at least until 2:30 am this morning. Billy gambled with quite a few people and stayed in action the whole time and like most of us got very little sleep although he probably got more sleep than I did.

MCWHORTER, should get out his bankroll and go after Billy. From what I have seen and have heard on here there are contrasting opinions about a lot of things but one thing Billy is not and that is a lock artist. We'll just have to leave that title to the self-proclaimed Lock-Smith-Walt Frazier.

I saw Billy take games that I thought he had no chance at while other games looked like gambling. I never saw him steal even once although he did win. When he won, most people thought he would lose and that's on the square. I met him said hello and identified myself to him and he was quite nice and fun to be around although I left him alone for the most part just wanting to sweat some of his action and the rest of the players.

Overall Billy won more than he lost but he was continuously in action and not afraid to bet it up. I would consider him a VERY fair man to gamble with, although considerably out of my league.
