MOSCONI Break Rules CHANGE

I like it! Too often under the old rule, even a very hard break where a ball went down was deemed "illegal." I might even go one step further and make them break with the cue ball on the Head Spot. Now you're talking!

Maybe next year we can have them close their eyes as well. Then it will really be "smash-and-hope."

Just play 10 ball and end this sillyness.

This is designed so America has their best chance possible to win the cup and make it more competitive.

No more excuses, :) got the team you wanted and now the break change, time you boys stepped up to the plate..

Great rule!! Much easier than the 3 balls past rule. Harder to control the 1 ball as well. I am interested in seeing how they try and make balls and get position with this break. I would hit the rack hard and keep the cue ball in the middle of the table. Maybe the Hard Break will finally come back!!

Damn - I just realized that the players may still try the "cut break" and break soft. I hope that does not happen, lol.

They'll practice under this rule and do whatever works.

Not a big fan of rule changes, but the races in this format are just too short to play with a regular 9-ball setup. Race to 5 with 1-ball-on-the-spot and break with ball in hand behind the headstring, the game is too easy and the winner of the lag becomes a huge favorite to win.

I love the rule and I don't think it gives anyone an advantage. Only wish they were using it at the open!

Joe, the break box is being used at the Open.

Looks like they have about 8 inches on each side of head string spot.

It is not as narrow as Mosconi is going with but

not as wide as the Joss box.

Kinda in between, a medium box !

Big difference here with players racking their own and 1 ball on the spot. It saddens me every year, the rack is too big a factor here.

If America wants to win they will ask Corey how to break in this new format. ;). Johnnyt

Missed this tweak. Is this supposed to fix the illegal break issue?
That rule needed reworking because legit breaks were leading to forced turnovers.

This fix may "work" in terms of making cut break cue ball harder to control.
But I don't think players will ever switch to hit-hard-n-hope.

If they want to encourage that style of break, I think there's a better solution.
One that will add something for the viewers.
Just have a minimum break speed and set it reasonably high (is 20 MPH unreasonable?)
Then use radar or break speed app to measure.

Display the speed prominently for spectators, just as they inform viewers of the speed of the serve
in tennis. Maybe even offer a cash prize for any legal break over 30 mph.

All they need is a Giant Brake Spot at the table head the same diameter as a pool ball....Legal to break from anywhere on that spot.

i really thought he should have a spot on the team vs RM.

All Rodney Morris did was go undefeated in winning against the single toughest field of the year on American soil at the US Open 10-ball in July in Las Vegas. Only two other Americans, Mike Dechaine (7th) and John Pinegar (9th) had a top ten finish. After Shane and Archer, Rodney is the most deserving member of Team USA. Yeah, why would he be on the team?
