I popped up back in the pool scene about 3 years ago, Alot had changed while I was biz man, The internet was invented, Some guy named Shane blew into the picture, Rodney got gray hair(no disrepect if you see this Rocket). Some things stayed the same, Jays hair line, JA still beating the world to death, Efren scratching his head.
The first year I was back I was recovering from 5 back operations(most recent was about 18 months ago) So the first year I played good in spots and couldnt play period in other times. I somehow became "Fatboy" an old name I have had since 86, but I put myself for better or worse into the pool scene. Love me or hate me is one thing, but they all know me-and thats kinda fun, I enjoy people. So the first year back was good.
Second year back I had a cue picked out that I really play good with, I used 8-10 cues the first year, I finally settled on a cue that brings out the best in me. I didnt let the maker or some sentmental thought lead me to the cue. Gus is my all time favorite cue maker, I wish I could have settled on a Gus, Lord knows I tried to get a Gus that brought out the best in me. I was able to play almost as much pool as I wanted, so I put myself in spots with all strong players for a year, It helped me alot. I could have used that knowlege when I was 18. What didnt happen this past year is I didnt win very often, not because I didnt play good, I did. But beating guys like Max Eberly aint a bargain.
So now the "Pool Season" is starting up for me. I took the summer off, I played hard for 10 months then end of May 09 I started to play 1-3 times a week, I never let myself get out of stroke all summer, I didnt want to lose anytime when I started back up. I'm hitting the ball good.
This year I'm focusing on only 2 things getting into shape(my back is good enough I will be able to start the gym right after the US Open). My second goal this year is to learn to win. I had a high win % many years ago, this past year I got pounded by champion after champion. I have played a couple soft games this summer. My friend John Mortan(RudeDog) used to say "I got to find a way to win" when he was way behind in a set. And he almost awalys did figure out a way to win and dig himself out of that hole he was in. I need to learn that-THIS YEAR!!!
So thats it, getting fit and winning are my 2 main issues this year.
What are you doing?
